D4.1 Spotlight: Biogas to Hydrogen – Latvia's Next Energy Frontier?

13/04/2025

The CERITA D4.1 report takes a close look at Latvia’s potential to transform landfill and biogas emissions into valuable clean fuels—specifically biomethane and hydrogen. As the region works to reduce emissions and increase energy independence, these pathways are becoming increasingly important.

The deliverable dives deep into hydrogen production methods, gas quality requirements, and infrastructure readiness. It also explores storage technologies and how hydrogen could be integrated into Latvia’s broader energy system.

Yet, the report doesn't shy away from challenges. It highlights significant barriers such as safety standards, regulatory uncertainty, and cost—all of which must be addressed to unlock the full potential of waste-to-hydrogen solutions.

With growing EU pressure to decarbonize, D4.1 serves as a crucial guide for policymakers and energy planners navigating the shift toward a greener future.
