One of the key goals of the CERITA project has been to enhance public awareness about the importance of sustainable waste management and the circular economy. A particular focus has been placed on educating the public about landfill operations, often hidden from everyday view.
As part of this effort, Getliņi EKO - Latvia’s leading municipal waste company -expanded its public education infrastructure by developing a dedicated excursion route at the landfill site. The one-hour guided walk provides visitors with an opportunity to see the key processes involved in modern waste management.
While not all operations can be accessed due to security restrictions (such as the waste sorting plant, BIO waste recycling plant, and power unit), the project made a significant step forward by visualizing previously unseen processes through innovative displays.
Two core processes were chosen to highlight:
- A video showing activities within the waste sorting facility
- A visual overview of the BIO waste recycling plant, explaining the transformation of waste into compost and biogas
These educational tools - presented on-screen at the site - offer a tangible way for visitors to engage with otherwise complex industrial systems.
All materials were created within the framework of the "Circular Economy in Riga and Tartu Waste Management Facilities" (CERITA) project. The initiative is 100% funded by the European Innovation Council and the Executive Agency for Small and Medium-sized Enterprises (EISMEA).
